Many Manchester United fans have, for some time, expressed their desire to see Jose Mourinho succeed Sir Alex when he decides to retire. We cannot scoff at the success he has had at such a young age and with so many teams like Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid.
So, what is it that makes him so special? Is it his ability to get his team motivated to play the way he likes to play? Is it his ability to defy all footballing authorities, whether they are based in England, Portugal or Spain? Is it his ability to wind-up other managers or players of other teams to get that slight psychological advantage in a game?
There are so many questions and very few answers I'm afraid. When he was the manager of Porto, he had it all, a great team, great players i.e Deco and they played great. This was seen against Celtic in a European final where they eventually beat Celtic. This is not to say that Porto had it easy, in fact Celtic had Balde sent-off for an innocuous challenge. Mourinho's players were simulating for most of the 90 minutes especially Deco.
He is a man that is motivated by the challenges and by the money. He went to Chelsea not because they were a big club, but because they had money to spend. He bought the necessary players to show the Premier league his intentions of winning it. He succeeded in getting Chelsea to the top of the tree with the likes of Terry, Lampard, Drogba, Cech and Cole who got them their. Nevertheless, after his initial successes, there was still no Champions League so, there was a parting, as Mourinho went to Real Madrid.
With players like Ronaldo, Kaka, Pépé, Casillas, Carvalho et al, it was difficult for a team like Real Madrid to lose any sort of match considering the quality of players Real had invested in. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell him that another team; FC Barcelona were going to gatecrash his little party, and be the all-time party poopers. They won nearly everything there was to be won.
Since 2008, Guardiola has won 9 trophies, which is an astounding achievement, which is an equivalent to winning a treble for 3 years on the bounce. Mourinho, in the same period has won 6 trophies, with 5 of them with Internazionale, and the Copa Del Rey is the only trophy he has won, and it could be possibly be a long time before he wins another.
Nevertheless, it begs the question, does Manchester United really want a manager like Mourinho?
* His teams are very physical, close to brutal i.e Real Madrid.
* His current team, if not winning play like Stoke City.
* He is a very defensive manager.
* Is a manager that could bring the game into disrepute.
* He doesn't stay with a club long enough to guarantee success i the long-run.
So, is he the natural successor to Sir Alex, or is his method too OTT, or his is defensive approach to the game not on the Manchester United mantra?
What do you think?
