What can we say about Sir Alex Ferguson that has not been said already? The man is a born winner, and everything he touches, turns to gold. His desire to win, his motivational skills with his players, his determination to succeed and his Malcolm X attitude of "By any means necessary."
From his days as a shop-steward at Govan shipyard, it was written in the stars that he will be a born leader. A man with a strong character, who will not let anyone dictate to him, whoever they may be. Suffice to say, if anyone thinks that they are bigger than Manchester United, they will have to pack their bags, as Sir Alex is indeed, Mr Manchester United.
His first desire was to manage a top-flight club in the Scottish Premier League and he did with Aberdeen. His first desire was to break up the "Glasgow monopoly", of the SPL(old First division.) From 1965 to 1978, the champions were either Celtic or Rangers, and he knew that for the good of Scottish football he had to break up the monopoly.
He managed Aberdeen to their first title win back in the season 1979/80 and this was the first of Aberdeen's title successes as they went on to claim the title on two more occasions from 1983/84 and the 1984/85 seasons. After that, the monopolisation of the SPL was started again by the two Glasgow clubs; Celtic and Rangers and since then, no other team has won the league title.
So, after an unsuccessful stint in the 1985/86 season, he had decided to leave Aberdeen and try and help Scotland's chances in the 1986 World Cup. After which, he came down from Scotland and joined Manchester United in November 1986 after Ron Atkinson, the man who bought Bryan Robson; was sacked.
So, Sir Alex came down during the 1986/87 season and the club managed to finish 11th, 2nd, 11th, 11th, 13th(the season they won the F.A Cup) and 6th place in the old First division. To be honest, it wasn't the brightest of starts for Sir Alex and until they won the F.A cup, he had shown little promise of bringing the title back to Old Trafford for the first time in years. In fact, the board were on the verge of sacking Sir Alex due to the results and their final standings in Division 1.
The season that was the most significant for Sir Alex, for Manchester United and his fans was 1989/90. This was the season that would change his whole future, and indeed the future of Manchester United and football in general. The goal that was scored against Oldham by Mark Robins, was the goal that effectively secured Sir Alex Ferguson's job as Manchester United manager.
So, after securing the F.A Cup by beating Crystal Palace in a replay, it was like a kick up the backside; not only for him but for his players too. During his time at Manchester United, he has been bold by signing players like Eric Cantona, who had a bit of a reputation and was seen as a major troublemaker by those who ply their trade in ligue 1. Another signing from Leeds United was in the form of Rio Ferdinand, who is still playing with Manchester United at the moment and in the form of his life. The amount spent on him at the time was classed as madness, but if we divide that by the number of years he has served with us, then it is a small amount.
So, to cut a long story short, Sir Alex has gone from zero to hero in 4 years, then from that F.A Cup win, no-one has ever really questioned his managing skills. It is clear that no-one can win the league title every single year, but what he has done for Manchester United, is brilliant.
To come from 7 league titles and 1 European cup, to 19 League titles and 3 European Cups/Champions League is a major achievement, and will in due course be given a title of Lord Ferguson of Aberdeen. He has done the impossible; he came from a working class background and already he is a Sir. There are those who have been made Sirs because of one thing or another, but have they worked as hard as Sir Alex, I very much doubt it. He is in a league of his own. The only thing that is missing is a title for Ryan Giggs.
